In the wake of yesterday's shooting at a Santa Fe high school that left an estimated 8 to 10 dead, politicians and the news media on all sides of the gun control debate have been quick to “set out their stalls” and opinions on what happened and what needs to happen next.
It has become apparent that he who shouts first (regardless of the quality or logic of their point) gets the lead on coverage and in many ways defines the debate to be had afterward.
The initial reactions naturally came from social media. The majority of which seemed to be people calling for gun control and denigrating the president for not having enacted new laws that would strip the Constitution of its power. The most sensible response to these people who would use tragedy for political point scoring would be to point out that in 8 years, President Obama did not enact what they are calling for.
Then we have the media. The usual suspects rolled out tired old argument s on gun control that would in actuality have done nothing to prevent this. No “assault style” weapons were used. No age restrictions would have prevented it ( the 17-year-old suspect apparently took a shotgun and a handgun from his father). And more stringent background checks would also not have prevented this as the suspect did not legally obtain the firearms.
And finally, we come to the politicians. At the head of this charge rides failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton with her “words of wisdom”. She said:
“Every day that we fail to act on gun violence, we are failing our children. This should be a day for soul searching across America – and that soul searching should be matched with legislating to begin dealing with this national shame.”
There is only one solution these three groups are looking for: a complete ban on all firearms in the United States. They should at least be honest about it, there is, after all, support for such a measure. But here's the problem. It doesn't work!
The UK and Australia have outlawed firearms, and yet surprise surprise, Australia just endured a mass shooting a couple of weeks ago, and gun deaths are aiming for a record high. When guns are against the law, only the outlaws will have guns.
