The ABC top is mad at Michael Strahan, sources say, after the Houston resident and “Good Morning America” anchor didn't end his vacation to return and cover the Hurricane Harvey disaster.
A source told the New York Post: “ABC News asked Strahan to come home from his holiday. He is from Houston. But he refused and is still floating around on a yacht in Greece somewhere. ABC is so upset with him.
“Another source stated that ABC staffers “just can't believe he didn't return.”However, Michael Corn, senior executive producer of “GMA” told me, “I talked with him daily. Michael was quite clear he wanted to be a part of the items we broadcast and we decided the best strategy was for him to lead the charge covering the recovery.
“Strahan's rep said, “They didn't ask him to return. He has been in direct contact with his loved ones — and thankfully they're doing fine. He's headed to Houston next week and will assist in any way that he can.”Miffing colleagues, even more, Strahan was in the second week of his yacht holiday, sources said, having recently gone on a safari.
“GMA” vet Robin Roberts returned from her end-of-summer escape to cover the catastrophe. We hear Roberts wasn't asked to return but did so voluntarily. At other networks, Anderson Cooper was allegedly scheduled to be off all week at CNN, but anchored his show from Houston on Wednesday.
Strahan's holiday ends Monday, and we hear he will be in Houston next week for ABC and “GMA” starting Tuesday. He tweeted, “In my hometown of Houston and everybody there … I Love You and am praying for your safety. H-TOWN LOVE!”
Reports say he will host an upcoming telethon for Harvey sufferers with celebrities Jamie Foxx,Reese Witherspoon and Blake Shelton. We reported earlier this year that Strahan has previously ruffled feathers by getting particular attention when “others who've been working there longer do not get that kind of treatment.” However, a source groused, “That is just bulls – – t.”
