The Alfie Evans case in the UK is one of the most disgraceful indictments of a medical system that seems to think its roots are socialist. The infant, Alfie, was taken off life support at the order of the courts despite the parent's wishes. Yet Alfie had other options. Treatment was being offered by other countries, he was granted citizenship by Italy so he could attend their treatment, even the pope intervened to ask for Alfie to be allowed to come to Italy for treatment! Yet the British state refused
Why? Because, as the builders of the Berlin Wall said, they made it to keep the people in so they could realize that socialism was good for them, which couldn't happen if they kept leaving.
And this is what is happening in Britain. The state wants its people to be in awe of the National Health Service because they see it as a success of socialism. It is not. It is bloated, corrupt, filled with pointless administration and managers, and it IS NOT, REPEAT, IS NOT in existence through socialism.
The NHS is paid for out of general taxation, its budget is ringfenced so it need never take a cut if the costs go up, it other public services that suffer or the tax rate that goes up. People are paying for it with their money just as surely as if it were enforced Obamacare.
By what right did the government and the NHS deny baby Alfie the right to try a treatment offered by someone. They sealed his fate, they sentenced him to die and denied his parents the right to try and save him. This was a demonstration of their power.
