Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emmanuel has decided that the president of the United States is not welcome in “his city.” In a lighthearted interview with Stephen Colbert, the mayor said that Chicago is a “Trump-free zone” and said that its new motto is “A city he’ll never sleep in.”
And sure, he was joking, but it highlights a very real problem with divisive politics these days. We have leftists declaring that President Trump is “Not Our President,” and that's fine coming from kids and fringe activists (the country is more than strong enough to put up with this), but when elected politicians begin the same sort of nonsense, it threatens the very idea of democracy.
Emmanuel was joking in some ways, but in others, he was deadly serious. His plans for policy involve ignoring mandates from the government, and essentially breaking the law…And this sets a dangerous precedent. If he disagrees that a presidential decision, and one that has been passed by the houses is wrong, then he is entitled to think so; what's more, he could also launch a legal challenge to get it overturned..These are his rights as both a mayor and a citizen. But to willfully just ignore the laws is another matter…That's called a crime.
And if it's good enough for the mayor of Chicago, then why not for the rest of us?
